Unveiled in California against the glamour of Monterey Car Week, Aston Martin’s newest V12 special is the most powerful front-engined car in the brand’s 113-year history. With 850PS on tap, the Valen will be built in just 150 examples worldwide.
A name that means strength
The Valen name derives from the Latin “valens” – strong, powerful – and it would be hard to imagine a more fitting christening. The car is the latest V12 masterpiece from Q by Aston Martin, the marque’s bespoke division, following in the tyre tracks of the Valour, Valiant and DBR22. The project was realised through the expertise of Aston Martin’s newly formed Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) department.
“Valen’s world-beating performance required a design to capture the raw motion and unmatched output of our V12 powertrain,” said Adrian Hallmark, Aston Martin CEO. “With more power, less weight, and a spectacular soundtrack, the dramatic design is backed up by equally dramatic performance.”
850PS and 3.0 seconds
The 5.2-litre twin-turbocharged V12 delivers 850PS and 1000Nm of torque – the latter from just 2500rpm. The eight-speed ZF transmission borrows shift strategies proven in Aston Martin’s Vantage GT4 race programme, cutting the 0-60mph sprint to 3.0 seconds, with top speed electronically limited to 214mph.
Even more telling is the diet. The Valen is up to 110kg lighter than the brand’s existing core V12 platform, thanks to motorsport-inspired materials: carbon fibre, aluminium, titanium and magnesium. An optional lightweight pack with machined-from-solid aluminium suspension arms and knuckles plus titanium chassis bolts saves 16.9kg on its own. New magnesium wheels come as standard, wrapped in Pirelli P Zero R tyres developed specifically for the Valen, and featuring Pirelli’s Cyber™ Tyre technology – integrated with Bosch Engineering – which shares real-time tyre data with the car’s dynamic control systems.
The chassis gains a solid-mounted rear subframe, model-specific springs and Bilstein DTX semi-active dampers, with stopping power from 410mm front and 360mm rear carbon ceramic brakes.
According to Simon Newton, Aston Martin’s Director of Vehicle Performance, the goal was a thrilling experience “that’s accessible to all skill levels, but keen drivers will absolutely relish.”
Scored in titanium
The soundtrack deserves a chapter of its own. A new lightweight titanium exhaust system uses micro mufflers, and its quad tailpipes – two upper, two lower – evoke the design language of a mid-engined hypercar. The 3D-printed titanium finishers are always open at the top, while the lower exits are valved and open according to drive mode. Engineers deliberately reduced lower frequencies while amplifying higher tones, tuning the upper outlets like organ pipes to generate resonance at high revs.
A provocative new form language
“Valen gave us the opportunity to explore and express more extreme emotions through a new form language and surface treatment,” said Marek Reichman, EVP and Chief Creative Officer.
The nose is defined by deeply recessed slimline headlamps and an angular radiator aperture, while the traditional side strake has been sharpened, elongated and absorbed into a functional vent that extracts air from the wheel arch. Saw-tooth vortex generators on the trailing edge of the sills reduce lift and generate downforce.
At the rear, fixed glass and a separate boot lid have been replaced by a single solid tailgate incorporating an aerodynamic wing, opening onto a 170-litre trunk with an optional bespoke luggage set (Touring Pack). Above a full-width light bar, the upswept tail acts as a Gurney flap, producing downforce without resorting to motorsport-style wings.
The show car wears Satin Andromeda Red, a Q Ultra developed finish blending deep red, copper and golden highlights that shift into intense blue undertones courtesy of Chromaflair pigments. The coach-built carbon fibre body is also available fully exposed, with the herringbone weave running down the centreline of the car, and can be tinted in bespoke colours.
Inside, the guiding principle is visual lightness: a slim centre console angled towards the driver, built with advanced 3D-printed components and carrying the performance switchpack introduced on the Valhalla. Buyers choose between new Sports Plus seats and lightweight carbon fibre performance seats, then between Semi-Aniline Leather with Alcantara or full Semi-Aniline Leather, across five material splits (Monotone, Duotone, Light Duotone, Tritone and Driver Focused).
